A 12-page drawing book. The front shows a black ink printed outline drawing of a waterside scene with forest and mountains in the background. A lone person in a canoe is on the water. At the water’s edge is an artist’s easel, equipment, and stool. The scene behind is partially reproduced on the artist’s canvas. The words “COLUMBIA DRAWING BOOK” is in the top right of the scene and an empty scroll is in the centre bottom. The book cover is a lightweight yellow cardstock and the pages within are a light-coloured construction paper. In the centre of the back cover is a stamp (3cm x 3.7cm) with an image of a Northwest style Totem on the left and the words “TOTEM, Made in BC” on the right. The CPC logo is above the word Totem. “Made in BC” is repeated below the stamp. The book is bound by two staples, both rusted.Narrative
The drawing portfolio, made in BC, is something that would have been readily available in stationary stores in Victoria. It will be useful in displays to demonstrate the artistic interests of the Dunsmuir daughters, particularly Effie.
History of Use
The photograph of Francis Napier Denison was used by him and his family in their homes before being donated to the castle society by a descendant in 2025. The drawing portfolio was purchased by the donor’s mother. It’s history of use prior to that is not known.
