postcardDescription
One sepia-toned photographic postcard of the west and south facades of Craigdarroch Castle showing the entire building and incorporating parts of the granite staircases leading to the south lawn. Foundation plantings of bushes and ivy are shown.
On the verso written by hand in ink is "Dunsmuir's Castle. Craigdarroch." Printed in black are postcard markings.Narrative
This photograph of Craigdarroch was printed directly on photographic paper using the original negative in a photographic enlarger. Photographer Ernest Crocker printed postcard markings on the back, indicating that his intention was to sell this card commercially as a souvenir. These postcard markings were printed upside-down by mistake, probably causing him to retain the card rather than sell it.
Ernest Crocker must had permission to come onto Craigdarroch's grounds to take this photograph. Regrettably, high quality images of most of Craigdarroch's historic landscape seem not to have been taken or survived. History of Use
This photograph was in the possession of Mr. Crocker until shortly before his death in 1968. It was given by him to his friend who later gave it to the donor's late husband. It has been on Vancouver Island since its creation.Date
