A square beveled mirror in a simulated repousséd and embossed patinated copper frame. It is actually made of plaster and covered in metallic leaf, the overall design of morning glory flowers, the inner frame trimmed in red velvet.Narrative
This attractive mirror with Dunsmuir family provenance was collected to present the Dunsmuir-era interiors at Craigdarroch Castle. History of Use
The donor of this mirror stated that her mother's parents purchased it at the Craigdarroch Executor's auction. That sale took place in June of 1909. The donor further stated that her grandparents resided at 110 Vining Street in Victoria, BC from 1938 to 1950 and used this mirror there. Before 1938, her grandparents wintered in Saskatchewan and summered in Victoria.
The Executor's auction at the Dunsmuir castle known as Hatley Park in Colwood, BC took place in June of 1939. While there is no reason to believe that the Craigdarroch provenance was misrepresented, it is possible that the two Dunsmuir castles have been confused in the case of this mirror.
In the Craigdarroch auction catalogue, lot #494, a "framed mirror" sold from the fifth bedroom. The Hatley Park auction catalogue lists three mirrors that could conceivably be this one. They are lots 849, 857, and 893.Date
