Description
One oil painting on paper (b) in original gilt frame (a).
Narrative
The painting is titled on the verso, “Morning at Oak Bay”. Although unsigned, former AGGV Curator Robert Amos, BC archivist Kathryn Bridge, and Craigdarroch Curator Bruce Davies attribute the work to Thomas Bamford (1861-1941). There are minor losses to the painting’s surface. An inscription on the verso indicates that it was purchased new by “Mrs. Croft”. She was Mary Jean Dunsmuir, a daughter of Robert Dunsmuir and Joan Olive Dunsmuir of Craigdarroch.
History of Use
This painting was purchased new by Mary Jean Dunsmuir (Mrs. Henry Croft) in about 1895. She used it at her Esquimalt residence, "Mt. Adelaide". It was next owned by her sister Elizabeth Bryden's son, John William Bryden, who used it his Royston, B.C. beach residence. It was next used by his son, Gerald Robert Bryden at his Royston, B.C. residence on Gartley Road before it was donated to Craigdarroch Castle by Gerald Bryden's daughter in 2015.
