Mary Jean Dunsmuir

Biography
Aka Mrs. Henry Croft.

Mary Jean Dunsmuir (1862-1928) was the fourth daughter of Robert and Joan Olive Dunsmuir, builders of Craigdarroch Castle. Raised in Nanaimo, she later moved to Victoria. Her waterfront house, Mt. Adelaide, sat in a beautiful Garry-oak meadow at Esquimalt’s West Bay. From here, Mary could look south to the Olympic Mountains and east to Craigdarroch Castle.

Mary was especially noted for her support of the arts and other charitable causes. Her gifts of money and time during WW1 were recognized with a medal and illuminated scroll from the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. She was named a Lady of Grace of the order.
