A sepia-toned photograph of Craigdarroch Military Hospital taken from the south lawn, two men in civilian clothes on the verandah, two women working in the vegetable garden at left, tall posts and netting where the terrace banks commence, an awning in the closed position against the Castle's facade above the southwest corner of the main balcony.
Narrative
Craigdarroch Castle was home to veterans of the Great War for only sixteen months, operating from September 1919 to December, 1920. The two men on the verandah are almost certainly patients of Craigdarroch Military Hospital. A crutch is clearly visible beside one of them.
Curative occupations helped the patients regain use of wounded limbs and spirits. Vegetable gardens were tended by patients on the Castle's south lawn terraces and also alongside the wall bounding the sothern edge of the expansive lawn. The appearance of the plants in this image in comparison with those depicted in 2007.023 taken September 25, 1919 (see:
http://104.198.19.107/Detail/objects/1184) help to date this photograph at approximately June or July, 1920.
Patients were encouraged to engage in sporting activities, including croquet, lawn bowls, and tennis. Two tennis courts were located on the south lawn. A corner of one of them is seen in this photograph and also what appears to a wicket used in croquet.
