Black and white photographic postcard of four farm buildings with a stone wall encircled by a road. The farm is set in front of a forested area with mountains in the background. The image is printed in a oval inset replicating a mat. Below is written Craigdarroch, Afton Water, New Cumnock. On the verso is a hand-written message addressed to Mrs. Lanmuir and postmarked September 20, 1911.Narrative
This postcard depicts Craigdarroch farm, situated about 40 kilometres southeast of Kilmarnock, Scotland, the hometown of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dunsmuir before they emigrated to Vancouver Island.
It is not known what inspired the Dunsmuirs to name their Victoria house Craigdarroch. Craigdarroch farm might have been familiar to one or both of them and perhaps the basis for their choice. But there are several places in Scotland named Craigdarroch. By including historic images of this and other Scottish Craigdarrochs in the museum collection, The Castle Society enables itself to present illustrated research unencumbered by copyright. It was collected for this reason. One day, it is hoped, there will be clear findings that explain which Craigdarroch they were sentimental about.
