Description
One gold pocket watch, the outside of the case jewelled with two rose cut PK1 diamonds. There is a depression for a third diamond that was missing when the watch was donated. The same overall design is on both exterior sides of the case, though only one side has the diamonds. On one side is a circle of silver and gold leaves. The opposite side has basket of flowers topped with a bow and the diamonds are on this side. The maker's name is on the front of the dial, as are Roman numerals. The inside bears the maker's mark: "Elgin Nat'l Watch Co.". Also stamped inside is "Patent Pinion" and "1666627". The number "171672" appears inside both covers. The watch's mechanical works are protected by clear beveled glass.
Narrative
This watch's long-term use by the Dunsmuir family makes it an important object in Craigdarroch's collection.
History of Use
This watch was among a number of pieces of jewelry given to Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society by the three daughters of Joan Olive Bryden and Alastair Douglas Macdonald in the late 1960s or early 1970s. The sisters told Castle Society founder James K. Nesbitt that the pieces, including this watch, were owned by their grandmother, Elizabeth Hamilton Dunsmuir (1848-1901), also known as Mrs. John Cowper Bryden.
