Accession Number
Hard leather-covered tube (b) holds a leather & cloth double-sided board. The board (a) rolls around a smaller red leather-covered cylindrical case (e) which houses the wooden playing pieces (f-kk) and two dice (ll & mm). There are 16 white and 16 black pieces, one side carved for checkers and backgammon, the other carved and coloured blue for chess.
This combination chess, backgammon, and draughts (also known as checkers) game was designed for travelling. The leather playing board folds and rolls around the meticulously-tooled playing pieces and fits snugly into a hard leather-covered tube. It was made by Jaques & Co. of London sometime during the last half of the 19th century. The Jaques & Co. website states: “Jaques is the oldest games company and sports manufacturer in the world. Passed down from father to son for six generations, Jaques have been responsible for inventing many well-known games, such as Croquet, Ping Pong, Snakes and Ladders, Ludo, Tiddledy Winks, The Staunton Chess Set, Happy Families, Snap and many more”.
