One black and white photograph of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales in British Army uniform accompanied by two men on a flag-draped platform waiting as two men and a pulley system place a cornerstone of a monument (Queen Victoria Monument in front of the B.C. Legislative Building). Verso: Stamped "Courtesy Canadian Pacific" and "Reference Dept. Oct. 3 1919 N.E.A." Crumpled paper typed on with the notation "Victoria, B.C. Prince of Wales lays corner stone of [illegible]" pencil marks "A6" and "D379" struck through.Narrative
This photograph of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales laying the cornerstone of the Queen Victoria monument on the north lawn of Legislative Buildings, Victoria, BC was taken on September 24, 1919. On the following day, he opened Craigdarroch Military Hospital. This is an exceedingly rare photograph taken by the publicity department of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which operated the Royal train during the Prince’s cross-country tour of Canada.History of Use
