Description
One colored postcard, c. 1910, of Dunsmuir California, depicting the fountain that Alexander Dunsmuir paid to have installed beside the railway tracks.
Narrative
This photograph of Dunsmuir, California was taken not long after Alexander Dunsmuir paid for the installation of a bronze fountain beside the train station. It is the circular structure centred in the lawn in the foreground. The large red brick building is The Weed Hotel.

The town of Dunsmuir was formerly known as Pusher. This is because it was the town where extra locomotives were added to trains so that they could be PUSHED over a nearby railway pass.

The town was re-named Dunsmuir after Alexander Dunsmuir told town officials that if they re-named the town "Dunsmuir", he would donate a fountain to the town. Dunsmuir California was famous for its fine pure spring water. Even in the 21st Century, the town's municipal water service does not require filtration or treatment of any kind.
