Description
One porcelain pitcher in the form and colour of an elephant tusk, the curving body ending with a round spout. The body is decorated with a single fern branch on one side, and on the other side, a single fern branch overlaid by a gingko tree branch. The colouring of the foliage is sage green, light blue, and pink. The leaves are outlined in delicate raised glided lines. The gilded handle is in the form of a stag’s antler. The round base is outlined in four bands of gilding of varying widths. On the bottom is the mark for the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company Ltd. (Royal Worcester) with three dots indicating manufacture in 1894. The design registration number of 37112 on the bottom indicates that the design was created in the 1880s. Measurements: 11cm W x 27cm H (18cm W with handle).
Narrative
The Royal Worcester Company catalogue refers to this design (#1116) as a “Tusk Ice Jug”. In essence, this is a pitcher (jug) intended to hold and pour ice water.

Unknown. The donor purchased this pitcher at public auction in Victoria, B.C. in July, 2021.
