One sepia-toned studio photograph of Margaret Joan Harvey (1871-1952) depicted from mid-chest up. The photograph is mounted on black cardstock. She is wearing a darkly-coloured low-cut blouse and a white pearl collar-type necklace. Her hair is pulled back to form a loose bun at the back of her head. Her head is turned to her right, exposing her left ear which has no earring. Beneath the photograph in gold-coloured lettering is: “Lafayette DUBLIN, GLASGOW & MANCHESTER.” On the back of the cardstock are award and medal stamps and citations too numerous to describe here (see the photograph of the back). This photograph depicts Margaret Joan Harvey, a granddaughter of Robert and Joan Dunsmuir. She was born and raised in Nanaimo. As a young woman, she was a student of Irvine Royal Academy near Kilmarnock, Scotland. This photograph was probably taken in Glasgow in about 1890.History of Use
This photograph was created in Scotland and used by Captain Berkeley Holme-Sumner and Margaret Joan Harvey (Mrs. Holme-Sumner) in Britain until the 1950s when it became the property of their daughter, Georgiana Holme-Sumner, and then by Georgiana Holme-Sumner’s son, who donated the photograph to Craigdarroch Castle in 2023. He had been using it at his home in Scotland.
