One sepia-toned photograph of Berkeley Holme-Sumner from mid-waist up. He is wearing a uniform of the Royal Navy, with epaulettes on his shoulders, and one single medal on his chest. His head is turned slightly to his left, and he is looking at the camera. There is generalized foxing of the photographic paper. The photograph is mounted on dark gray cardstock. The verso is marked “3” by hand in pencil.Narrative
Berkeley Holme-Sumner (1872-1943) is depicted in this photograph. He is wearing the East and West Africa Medal, which was a campaign established in 1892 to award men and women involved in campaigns in East and West Africa between 1887 and 1899. The photograph was probably taken in 1899.
In 1896, Berkeley Holme Sumner married Margaret Joan Harvey at Victoria’s Christchurch Cathedral, and thereafter the couple lived in the United Kingdom. She was a granddaughter of Robert and Joan Olive Dunsmuir.History of Use
This photograph was used by the late Captain Berkeley Holme-Sumner and his wife Margaret Holme-Sumner in Britain until the 1950s when it became the property of their daughter, Georgiana Holme-Sumner, and then by Georgiana Holme-Sumner’s son, who donated the photograph to Craigdarroch Castle in 2023. He had been using it at his home in Scotland.Date
