One nickel-plated chafing dish. It is oval in shape with an upward slope to the sides, with a flat wide rim. The base has a hot water reservoir on top of which sits an earthenware dish with blue transfer print decoration. There is a removable oval shaped dome with a white glazed ceramic knob on its top. All of the nickel plating is in poor condition, showing significant pitting from corrosion.Narrative
This chafing dish was intended to be used in a kitchen, a pantry, a dining room, and a breakfast room.History of Use
This chafing dish was donated to Craigdarroch in 1985 by Castle volunteer docent named Isla Tuck. Its history of use before then is unknown.
Ms. Tuck had a long association with Craigdarroch. For several years before the Castle was a museum, she served as a Trustee on the Victoria School Board. She attended regular meetings in the Castle’s dining room.
This chafing dish was recommended for deaccession and transfer to Craigdarroch’s Education Collection in May, 2023 so that it could be used in hands-on education programming with Castle visitors.Date
