Document/Book

Accession Number
2022.006.020.003
Description
A cream-coloured paper folded in half, thus creating four faces, the front face bearing typewritten list of rules (Chenhall: rules) in blue in that prescribes the dress required for men and for women attending the Coronation of Their Majesties King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra on August 9, 1902. At the top of the paper is an embossed mark consisting of a Crown at its top, below it a cartouche formed by a slightly elongated life ring surrounding a ship’s anchor, and the words ADMIRALTY WHITEHALL surrounding the anchor within the confines of the life ring.
Narrative
This list of rules for how to dress indicates that Lieutenant Berkeley Holme-Sumner wore his Royal Navy uniform to the Coronation of Their Majesties King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra at the Westminster Abbey on August 9, 1902. His wife Margaret Joan Harvey was not a peeress, and therefore wore Full Court Dress (an opulent gown) without a train, but with feathers (in her hair).

This set of rules prescribing dress for men and women is part of other ephemeral papers in this accession that are related to the Coronation of Their Majesties King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.
History of Use
This list of rules prescribing dress was used by Berkeley Holme-Sumner, R.N. and Mrs. Margaret Joan Harvey (Mrs. Berkeley Holme-Sumner) in England until it was inherited and used by their daughter Georgiana Holme-Sumner (Mrs. Robert Dunlop Stewart) in England, and later, in Scotland by her son, who donated it to The Castle Society in 2022.
