Description

One sepia-toned photograph on mat paper depicting a group of wedding celebrants consisting of two standing men and five seated and standing women and girls. The females wear white dresses and hold bunches of flowers. The men are dressed in dark morning suits. Behind them is a glazed cabinet containing assorted ceramic objects. Along the bottom of the photograph the following is stamped in blue upper-case font: "ALL PROOFS TO BE RETURNED TO LAFAYETTE, 160, NEW BOND ST. W.1." On the verso are numerous markings in pen and pencil: "15" "Sept 1922 Marriage to Joseph William Gray RAF" "96863" "1-1-27" "Mrs. Gray" "Joseph + Pat and his wife Margaret Bannerman Georgiana, Marjorie, Joan ?" "Mother and Biddy"

This photograph depicts the wedding party of Joan Holme-Sumner and Joseph William Gray, RAF. It was taken in September, 1922. The individuals in this group photograph are: (top Left) Joseph William Gray, RAF, the groom; (top right) Patrick Somerset Holme-Sumner, brother of the bride; (bottom row left to right) Georgiana Holme-Sumner, sister of the bride; Marjorie Jean "Biddy" Holme-Sumner, sister of the bride; Joan Holme-Sumner, the bride; Margaret Bannerman, formerly Miss Marguerite Grande, wife of Patrick Somerset Holme-Sumner, sister-in-law of the bride; the girl at far right is unidentified. The bride and her siblings are great grandchildren of Robert and Joan Olive Dunsmuir.

History of Use

The donor of this photograph is a great great grandson of Robert and Joan Olive Dunsmuir, and the son of Georgiana Holme-Sumner. This photograph was used by his mother and himself in England and Scotland before it was donated to The Castle Society in 2022.
