Description
One sepia-toned photograph of a gentleman mounted on cardstock. It depicts Berkeley Holme-Sumner, RN in naval uniform. His likeness is visible from mid-torso up. The bottom bears incised gilded lettering from the photographer’s studio: "E Courret. Cia LIMA", and the lettering is slightly obscured by the torn paper-coating and cutting of the matboard. On the verso, the following is printed in upper-case font: "MADALLAS DE ORO 1869-1872 E. COURRET Y CIA LIMA CALLE DE LA UNION Mercaderes, 197"
Narrative
This photograph of Berkeley Holme-Sumner, RN (1872-1943) in naval uniform appears to have been taken in Lima, Peru while in his 20s. On 12 February 1896 he married Margaret Joan Harvey, a granddaughter of Robert and Joan Olive Dunsmuir, at Victoria’s Christ Church Cathedral. He was second son of Arthur Holme-Sumner, owner of Berkeley Castle, Berkeley, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom.
History of Use
The donor of this photograph is a great great grandson of Robert and Joan Olive Dunsmuir. This photograph was used by his family in England and Scotland before being donated to The Castle Society in 2022.
