Description

One in a pair of silver-plated pierced metal candle shades. The shades are divided into three horizontal bands. The top and bottom band are decorated with pierced vertical lines. The central band is made up of curving lines with stamped flowers. Marks for Gorham Manufacturing Company, Providence, Rhode Island on the inside of the shades.

Narrative

This pair of silver-plated pierced metal candleshades were made by one of the best makers of silver and silver-plated wares in 19th Century United States of America. Their quality and Dunsmuir/Bryden family provenance make them ideal for display in Craigdarroch’s period interiors.

History of Use

This pair of candleshades were first owned and used by Dunsmuir descendant John William Bryden (1869-1953) and his wife Ellen Gertrude Tarbell (1882-1964) at their Oak Bay B.C. residence at 899 Transit Road, and subsequently at their waterfront house in Royston, Vancouver Island (near Cumberland and Courtenay). They were then inherited by their son Gerald Robert Bryden (1913-1992) of Royston and then by his daughter in Campbell River, from whom they were acquired by The Castle Society.
