This book was very likely once owned by the James and Laura Dunsmuir family during the periods that they lived at Government House, Victoria, BC, and later at their house Hatley Park, later known as Royal Roads Military College and Royal Roads University in Colwood, BC. This is believed because of the writing inside the book, “Dunsmuir, July 1907”. The script used in the writing of “Dunsmuir” is obviously similar to the script used by Mrs. James Dunsmuir when she wrote a small gift card to baby Hilda Greaves on the occasion of that girl’s Christening (see public database link for: 985.035.001.002 https://collection.thecastle.ca/admin/editor/objects/ObjectEditor/Summary/object_id/2195).
The 1939 Hatley Park auction catalogue does not list Caleb Conover, Railroader by Albert Payson Terhune. However, there are seventeen separate auction lots for “lot of books”. This book could have been among these lots of books, or it could have been removed by a family member prior to the sale and later found in a Victoria bookseller’s stock.
