Description
A landscape oil painting in gilt frame, green grass in the foreground, at left a winding grey driveway leading to three buildings with three deciduous trees behind, to the right a cluster of deciduous trees, the background a blue-coloured sky, the artist's style amateurish, the framer's name on a tag on the back of the frame.
Narrative
The donor of this picture was the daughter-in-law of auctioneer H.W. Davies, M.A.A., who oversaw the three-day auction of Dunsmuir property from Craigdarroch in June of 1909. She told Craigdarroch's curatorial staff that her father-in-law received this as a gift from the Executors of Joan Olive Dunsmuir's Estate after it failed to sell at the auction. She said the painting was not framed when her father-in-law received the gift and that he had it framed.

There are several listings for oil paintings in the catalogue for this sale in which no details are given related to size, subject, artist or framing (see: 2000.25 http://104.198.19.107/Detail/objects/2857). This painting must be one of these.
History of Use
Owned by Joan Olive Dunsmuir and used at Craigdarroch until being given to auctioneer H.W Davies in 1909. It was subsequently kept with his descendants in Victoria, BC until being donated to The Castle Society in 1993.
