On the back of the photograph top center is writing in pen which is cut off, this includes "mes Dunsmuir J". Below this "Aged 2 years" is also written in pen. On the left center of the photograph "P 38" is written in pencil.
Narrative

Joan Muriel Humphreys (Mrs. Luttmer) identified the subject as "Boy" Dunsmuir and dated it at 1896/1897. If the name on the back of the oval photograph were not cut off, it would read "James Dunsmuir Jr. Aged 2 years."

During late 19th Century Britain and North America, it was not uncommon for boys and girls under five  years of age to be dressed similarly.
