Narrative

This box was made by one of Victoria’s most successful wholesale merchants. Dating it precisely has proven to be difficult. However, the box’s overall design generally resembles 19^th Century Canadian, American, and British food packaging. This factor, plus the prominence of the R.P. Rithet company during the time of Craigdarroch’s Dunsmuir family occupancy, provides rationale for the box’s presence in Craigdarroch’s collection, and for its display in the Castle’s restored kitchen areas.

Donated many years before it was accessioned by an anonymous donor.
