Description

Silver-plated tablespoon. Louis XVI pattern has decorative edges with a double line and three pairs of bright cut geometric decoration. Acanthus leaf design on the heel and tip. Makers marks from Mappin & Webb on the back of the handle. Engraved 'ED' for Elinor Dunsmuir on the handle.

Narrative

This spoon once belonged to Emily Elinor Dunsmuir and was part of her set of table flatware, the location of which is today unknown.  Elinor likely used this silverware in her London (UK) apartment at 12 Gloucester Place, Portland Square, and later at her cottage in Comox, B.C. There are few objects documented to have once been owned by Elinor Dunsmuir. This elegantly-shaped and well-made spoon bearing Elinor’s monogram aptly illustrates her aesthetic sensibility and is useful in telling her story through exhibit and publication.

History of Use

Elinor likely used this spoon in her London apartment at 12 Gloucester Place, Portland Square, and later at her cottage in Comox, B.C. It may have also been stored at Hatley Park. The donor’s mother attended public auctions in Victoria from about 1920 onward. She told the donor that she bought this spoon at auction and that it had been owned by Elinor Dunsmuir.
