Narrative
This book was written by James Guy Payne Audain (1903-1970), a grandson of Hon. James Dunsmuir and Laura Dunsmuir, and great grandson of Robert and Joan Dunsmuir, builders of Craigdarroch Castle. James Audain was a founder, Vice President, and President of The Society for the Preservation and Maintenance of Craigdarroch Castle, also known as The Castle Society and the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society.

Alex Dunsmuir’s Dilemma chronicles the life and times of the Dunsmuir family from the perspective of a family member, with a particular focus on Alexander Dunsmuir (1853-1900). The book is in some ways a replacement of James Audain’s previous Dunsmuir book, From Coal Mine to Castle, which was the subject of a lawsuit brought by the author’s first cousin, Robin James Dunsmuir (1912-1990). A court ordered that book removed from bookstores and libraries, effectively banning it.

James Audain dedicated his book, Alex Dunsmuir’s Dilemma, to his dog Puck.
