Scholars believe that his were original works, and that Bain was heavy influenced by his immersion in ancient Indian mystecism Sanskrit poety. Of Bain's writings, the New York Times said "the stories are not easy to describe, but it has been said of them that we have nothing in English literature at once so tender, so passionate, so melancholy and so wise."1
