One paper cigarette package. The front cover's top section depicts a white lifesaving ring with gold-coloured ropes wrapped around it. Around the inside of the ring in dark blue upper-case letters lined in red is "Players Navy Cut". In the centre of the ring is a short, blonde-haired man wearing dark blue naval uniform with a soft hat with 'hero' printed across the front. Behind him to each side is a a sailing ship on the left and a steamship on the right. The background is a sunset over wavy waters. Printed in lower-case lettering on the light blue-green coloured sides is "10 Cigarettes 10". The back cover is light blue-green outlined in a yellow rope. Horizontal across the centre is a dark blue band bordered on the top and bottom with a gold design. Inside the band is, "Rich, Cool Virginia Tobacco". In the top section is an image of a castle with trade mark printed above and "Nottm Castle" below. On the bottom section is "John Player & Sons, England". On the top of the insert section in blue with white lettering is "Navy Cut Medium". A Canadian Excise Tax sticker, "Series 1915" is glued to the top. On the bottom is the manufacturer's name. There is foil inside the package.Narrative
This cigarette package was found in either the crawlspace or attic of Craigdarroch Castle by Castle Society employees in 1972. The pristine condition of this example suggests that this one was found in the attic.History of Use
This package was used by a patient or staff member of Craigdarroch Military Hospital sometime between January 1,1919 and March 21, 1921. It was found at Craigdarroch in the attic or crawlspace in April of 1972. Date
