Description
One small shipping box in two parts: a -the lid; b-bottom. Both are of heavy-weight gray coloured cardboard glued together and covered in a light brown paper. The bottom (8.2cmL X 2cmH X 5.5cmW) is plain on the inside. It has black printing: "if undelivered, return to: - Director of Navy Accounts, Branch 3B, "D" Block, Foxhill Hutments, BATH, Somerset." The lid has a handwritten address in blue ink: "Mr. R.J. Dunsmuir, c/o Royal Trust Co. Government Street, (Government street is crossed out) 3905 Tudor Ave., Victoria, B.C. Canada". A black stamped marking in the right corner is a circle with a crown in the inside. In the top left corner is the postage mark, machine stamped in blue ink: "May 14, Duty, Victoria". On one side of the lid printed in pencil is: "LJX 193890".
History of Use
This box was used to mail four WWll military service medals and an explanatory pamphlet to Robin James Dunsmuir in about 1946. Mr. Dunsmuir used the box to hold these items in Victoria until his death in 1990 when they became the property of his widow, Kathleen "Kay" Dunderdale Hall Dunsmuir. Following her death in 1992, the box and medals were given to The Castle Society by her Executrix.
