Description

One military medal consisting of a six-point cast bronze star attached with a round metal ring to a piece of ribbon (14L X 3.2W) with three equally spaced vertical stripes, each 1cm wide, on one side is dark blue, the middle is red and on the right is a light blue. On the front in the centre of the star is a cast circle with the words, "THE 1939-1945 STAR". Inside the circle is cast lettering of the Royal Cypher, "GRI, VI". Centred at the top of the circle is a cast crown. The reverse side of the star is plain.

Narrative

This medal is known as the "1939-45 Star". It was instituted in recognition of service in the war of 1939-1945 and awarded for service in the Battle of Britain. This ribbon is worn with the dark blue stripe furthest from the left shoulder.

History of Use

This medal was one of four issued to Robin James Dunsmuir for service in World War W II that are part of this accession. He used them in Victoria until his death in 1990. The medals and accompanying pamphlet were then used by his widow, Kathleen ("Kay") Dunderdale Hall (Mrs. Robin Dunsmuir) until her death in 1992 when her niece gave them to Craigdarroch Castle.
