The creator of this picture, Thomas Attwood (New Zealander,1865-1926), studied at the Birmingham School of Art in England. When he painted this scene, there were two rivers in New Zealand named Wanganui – one on the north island, and one on the south island. The river on the north island was renamed “Whanganui” in the late 20th century to avoid confusion. It is not known which of the two rivers is depicted in this painting.History of Use
