Accession Number
988.007.007Description
One clear cut cocktail glass. The foot has cut grooves radiating from the stem out to the edge. The stem is faceted with six sides and thinner at the bottom than at its top which takes the form of a squat faceted knob. The top of the glass is clear and the first cut decoration to appear from the top is a crest. This takes the form of a monogram between two wings, which appears to be "ASSM". Beneath this in a ribbon is engraved the motto: "SPES MEA IN DEO". Beneath and beside the motto are three bands of cut decoration, each separated with three horizontal bands. The top and bottom portions are cross-hatched and the centre band is scalloped. Narrative
This is one in a set of eight glass cocktail glasses forming this museum accession.
The motto engraved into it, "SPES MEA IN DEO" translates into MY HOPE IS IN GOD.History of Use
These Dunsmuir family glasses were purchased by The Castle Society from a Toronto, Ontario antique store in 1988. The glasses were in the store on consignment. The consignor's parents bought them at the Hatley Park auction in 1939. There were at least five liqueur glasses of the same pattern acquired by them at the same time. The glasses forming this accession were subsequently used in Ottawa by the family before being consigned for sale in Toronto. Date
