An off-white bedspread with elaborate multi-coloured crewel-work of a tree with flowers covering the entire surface area.Narrative
This bedspread is decorated in crewel-work, a type of hand embroidery characterized by wool thread on a cotton background. In this case, the background is a damask cotton. Crewel-work often utilizes Jacobean-styled patterns with floral and animal designs, much like this one.
It was made by Adele Macleod for Isla Tuck between 1943 and 1944. The late Ms. Tuck was a Trustee on the Victoria School Board and volunteer docent for The Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society. The embroidered inscription on the bedspread suggests that Isla Tuck was a resident of the Roccabella Boarding House at 806 Quadra Street Victoria, BC when the presentation was made. (see:

Isla Tuck was a volunteer docent at Craigdarroch Castle when she donated this piece to Craigdarroch. A 1947 photograph of the Victoria School Board Trustees includes Isla Tuck shortly after she received this quilt.
