Description
A parian ware figurine of a seated woman reading a book, her costume a flowing gown draped on her crossed legs, her hair tied in a bun, the base marked with the artist's name, "DALOU" and with the maker's mark, "SEVRES", and to the right of these marks an engraved brass plaque attached with two slotted brass screws.
Narrative
This fine parian ware object was made by the French company, Sevres (Manufacture nationale de Sévres). It is a copy of a plaster statuette titled "The Reader" created by Jules Dalou (French, 1838-1902) between 1871 and 1879. That work is in the Petit Palais art museum in Paris. This parian ware version  was acquired by The Castle Society in the 1970's for display in Craigdarroch's Dunsmuir-era interiors.
History of Use
This figure was presented by the Government of France to the Hon. Walter Cameron Nichol, the 12th Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, on March 16, 1925. The figure stayed in his family until it was given to The Castle Society by his daughter in 1969. 1
