One fine Satsuma plate with terra-cotta colours and blue flowers on a cream-coloured background. There are twenty human figures. The plate is profusely decorated in gold. On the bottom is a black rectangular mark with no characters on it. Underneath the glaze in black Arabic lettering is: "L Haggerty".Narrative
This plate was made in Satsuma Province in southern Kyushu, Japan's third largest island. It probably dates to the Meiji Period (1868-1912).History of Use
This plate was purchased for Craigdarroch by The Castle Society's founding President James K. Nesbitt from Frances Jordan, owner of "Norma MacDonald's Treasure House in Century Inn" at 603 Pandora Avenue, Victoria, BC on May 11, 1972. Its history of use before then is not known.Material
