Narrative
The town of Dunsmuir, California was first named Pusher because extra ‘pusher’ locomotives were needed to push trains over the steep mountain pass nearby. The town was noted for its fine drinking water. A regular traveller between Victoria and San Francisco, Alexander Dunsmuir (son of Robert and Joan Dunsmuir) promised town officials that he would donate a fountain to the citizens if the name of the place was changed to Dunsmuir. They did so, and the fountain is still in operation in a city park and it bears a bronze plaque explaining Alexander’s connection.
