Description
A 10 karat gold thimble with a raised patterned rim. Above the rim is a wide band of floral pattern with a cartouche engraved with the name 'Katie'. There is a maker's mark for Ketcham McDougall and "10k" below the inscription. Knurling above the band and over the top.
Narrative
Thimbles are designed to protect the fingers and give increased leverage while pushing a needle through fabric. In the Victorian period, thimbles were often highly decorative and used as collectible as well as practical items.
History of Use
The donor was a collector of needlework items and left this to Craigdarroch as part of a large bequest of sewing tools.
