Description
A gold thimble with a raised, patterned rim. Above the rim is a wide band with an engraving of a building (a castle) with two steeples and one turret. On the other side is a cartouche, flanked by a leaf design. The initials AEG are engraved in the cartouche. It is stamped with the thimble size 8.
Narrative
Thimbles are designed to protect the fingers and give increased leverage while pushing a needle through fabric. In the Victorian period, thimbles were often highly decorative and used as collectible as well as practical items.
History of Use
The donor was a collector of needlework items and left this to Craigdarroch as part of a large bequest of sewing tools.
