Description
A flat-topped porcelain thimble. At the top and rim is a gold band. In between them is a hand painted bird, with branches, leaves and flowers all around the body of the thimble. There is knurling at the thimble's top. There are no maker's or design marks.
Narrative
Thimbles are designed to protect the fingers and give increased leverage while pushing a needle through fabric. In the Victorian period, thimbles were often highly decorative and used as collectible as well as practical items. 
History of Use
The donor was a collector of needlework items and left this to Craigdarroch as part of a large bequest of sewing tools.
