Description
A sterling silver and enamel thimble. The bottom band has a strip of raised holly leaves that have been milled separately and applied to the main body. These are enamelled in green and red. The upper sides and top are covered in knurling. The rim is stamped with a registration number 212114, J.F (James Fenton) and with Birmingham assay marks for 1893.
Narrative
Thimbles are designed to protect the fingers and give increased leverage while pushing a needle through fabric. In the Victorian period, thimbles were often highly decorative and used as collectible as well as practical items. 
History of Use
The donor was a collector of needlework items and bequeathed this to Craigdarroch as part of a large gift of sewing tools.
