Description
A sterling silver and gold thimble. The upper half and top is sterling silver with knurling. Below is a wide gold band with a floral design and the monogram "MEC". On the band are the marks 8(size) and 14kt. Inside the top are the marks KMD (Ketcham McDougal) and "sterling".
Narrative
Thimbles are designed to protect the fingers and give increased leverage while pushing a needle through fabric. In the Victorian period, thimbles were often highly decorative and used as collectible as well as practical items. 
History of Use
The donor was a collector of needlework items and left this to Craigdarroch as part of a large bequest of sewing tools.
