Description
A white porcelain liquid measure in the form of a thimble. On one side is the crest of The City Of Dublin with the motto "Obedientia Civium Urbis Felicitas" (Obedience of the citizens produces a happy city) beneath. On the back is a small picture of a castle, which matches the castles on the front crest. There is knurling half way up the measure and over the top. The rim has a gold band around it. On the inside is the trademark "Robinson & Leadbeater England" and "Leadless Glaze Victorian Porcelain".
Narrative
Over-sized thimble shaped liquid measures were common novelty items and were often used as decorations or souvenirs. These were often decorated with miscellaneous coats-of-arms including the arms of the seaside resorts where they were sold before WW1, a style known as crested ware.
History of Use
The donor was a collector of needlework items and left this to Craigdarroch as part of a large bequest of sewing tools.
