Description
One gold-colored picture frame painted with bronze powder paint over the same material and also over the original narrow gold-leafed bands.
Narrative
This frame was separated from its original portrait of Hon. Robert Dunsmuir in the 1960's by the late Gerald Robert Bryden (1913-1992), a great-grandson of Hon. Robert Dunsmuir. He gave the portrait to The Castle Society in 1989 (see 989.9). His daughter gave this frame to The Castle Society in 2007 and the two objects were re-united. The fate of the original mat is unknown.
History of Use
This bronze powder-painted and gilt frame was originally used to hold a portrait of Hon. Robert Dunsmuir (see: 989.9) that the donor’s father, the late Gerald Robert Bryden, gave to Craigdarroch in 1989. The frame and picture had been in continuous Dunsmuir (Bryden) family ownership until that time, and would have probably been in the Royston, B.C. area since the 1930's.

According to her daughter, in the 20th Century Mrs. Gerald Bryden asked her husband to separate the Dunsmuir portrait from the frame so that she could insert a print of the painting Blue Nude, a 1902 work by Pablo Picasso. The Dunsmuir print and frame were reunited by The Castle Society in 2007 thanks to the kindness of the two daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Robert Bryden.
