A blue woolen field hockey sweater, Victoria College shield-form crest bearing initials "VC"on the lower front, above it a winged shield-form Victoria College crest bearing the initials "VC" and "30".Narrative
This Victoria College field hockey sweater was worn by the donor’s mother, Margaret Nan Josephine (aka ‘Nan’) Eve while a student at Victoria College at Craigdarroch Castle in 1930. A team photograph taken at Craigdarroch (see Craigdarroch Castle Collection 2016.011) shows Nan Eve wearing a similar sweater - probably this one. It is likely that the crests on this sweater were added after the team photograph was taken.
Nan Eve was one of the few women who carved her name into the Castle’s woodwork. This carving is preserved in-situ in Craigdarroch's room 302.
Nan’s father, Ernest Eve, was founder of BC Airways and owner of Lansdowne Airstrip, a large piece of land now partially occupied by Victoria’s Lansdowne Middle School. Nan was a proficient pilot but ceased flying after her c.1942-43 marriage to John (“Jack”) Dangerfield, a Royal Canadian Naval Officer.
A description of the fate of BC Airways is found in the book, Wings Across the Water: Victoria’s Flying Heritage 1871–1971 by Peter L. Smith and Elwood White.History of Use
