Black and white photograph of a young boy and two smaller children on a terrace. The boy is wearing a sun hat, shirt and tie. He is standing behind a girl seated in a finely carved wooden chair. She is also wearing a sun hat and summer dress. A toddler is sitting or standing on her right side. The photograph is framed so that only the head and shoulders of the toddler are visible. There are wicker lounge recliners behind them, one of which is covered with a quilt and plush pillow. A blanket is also heaped on a table. On the left side of the photograph, a woman is sitting under a canopy. There is a wooden table in the foreground of the photograph obscuring our view of her.
In the background, there is a building with a large, three-sided bay window. The upper portions of the window contain art glass. An open doorway on the right provides access from the terrace to the house. Both the top third of the door and the transom above contain leaded art glass.Narrative
This photograph depicts a scene on the terrace at Hatley Park. The children are grandchildren of James and Laura Dunsmuir, namely: James Audain, Laura Audain, and seated in the chair is Marion Victoria Bromley, known to the family as 'Mouse'. The woman seated on the left is Laura Mary (Maye) Bromley (nee Dunsmuir). The approximate ages of the children (Laura Audain was born in February, 1909) suggests that the photograph was taken soon after construction of Hatley Park was completed in 1910. History of Use
This photograph and the Dunsmuir family album that it comes from was passed down through Laura Dunsmuir's daughter Dola Frances Dunsmuir (Mrs. Henry Cavendish) to the family of her sister Kathleen Euphemia Dunsmuir (Mrs. Seldon Humphreys) from whom it was acquired by The Castle Society in 2012.
