Sepia toned photograph of a white bearded man holding a cane and an elderly woman standing in a garden next to a bird bath.Narrative
The couple depicted in this photograph are Laura and James Dunsmuir. They are standing in the Italian garden at Hatley Park, with the balustraded west wall of the terrace visible behind them. The Italian garden was installed by Boston-based landscape architects, Franklin Brett and George Hall as part of the general improvements to the Hatley Park estate between 1911 and 1914.
The bird bath was removed in 1972 and replaced with a cenotaph memorializing former cadets of Royal Roads Military College who were killed in action in World War II and Korea. The military college opened on the site first as a Naval training establishment in 1941.History of Use
This photograph was taken in about 1914 and placed in an album created by the James and Laura Dunsmuir family at Hatley Park.
Sometime after Laura Miller Dunsmuir's death in 1937, the album became the property of Dola Frances Dunsmuir (also known as Mrs. Dola Cavendish) and was kept at her house Dolaura in Colwood, B.C. After her death, the album was owned by her sister Kathleen's daughter, Judith Humphreys (also known as Mrs. Judith Joy). Her daughter donated the album to Craigdarroch Castle in 2012.Date
