Description
One black and white postcard depicting Craigdarroch Castle, circa 1905, the camera situated near Fernwood Road between Fort and Yates Streets looking in a south easterly direction, the north boundary masonry wall topped with wrought iron, the 135' flagpole visible closer to Castle, the Garry oaks devoid of foliage, the sky cloudy, at the bottom of the image in red machine-printing the words "Dunsmuir Castle Victoria, B.C." and at the lower left corner "Pope Stationary Co. (Germany)", and handwritten in ink at the centre bottom, "Bon souvenir pour toi.", the verso divided into three sections and the words "Post Card", "This space may be used for correspondence" and "Address only here" the publisher's name printed across the bottom front left corner, a one-cent stamp with the profile of Edward Vll, a hand-written greeting in black ink.
Narrative
This image of Craigdarroch depicts the wrought iron railing and 135' flagpole which were added to the 28 acre site in 1898. The King Edward VII 1-cent stamp on the verso was issued in 1903 and printed until 1908.
History of Use
This card was originally owned by Mr. L. Robert, of Hamming Bay, B.C. It was purchased by The Castle Society in a Victoria shop sometime before 1983.
