Description

One book with a tan leather spine with five raised stripes and two oxblood coloured stripes with the title and series titles printed on them in gold. Cover is marbleized paper with tan leather corners. Marbleized text block matches the cover.

Narrative

This late 19th century set of 15 volumes of Dickens’ Works comes from the Burch family house in St. Catharines, Ontario (now demolished). Its builder, Mr. George Burch (b.19 October, 1842 Glastonbury, England, son of William Burch, watchmaker) managed a thriving machine and tools factory in St. Catharines, ON. The house was known to the family as the “Thorold Road House” (79 Thorold Road) and was one of most lavish mansions in the area. A high quality period photograph of the library in this house has survived, and the many books shown in it resemble this set of Dickens’ Works. A copy of the photograph forms part of the collection record. The donor is the great granddaughter of George Burch.

History of Use

This book is part of a set was used in the Burch family house in St Catharines, Ontario (now demolished).  The set was kept by his decendants in St. Catharines until 2013 when it was donated to Craigdarroch Castle.
