Description
A sepia-toned photograph of Craigdarroch Castle and grounds from Fort Street c.1900. The road, grounds and oak trees in foreground with the Castle as viewed from the northwest in the background, the Craigdarroch flagpole visible to the far left of the photograph, "Dunsmuir Castle" printed in white block letters at bottom right, telegraph/telephone/streetcar lines on Fort Street visible in foreground.
Narrative
This is a real photograph postcard of Craigdarroch Castle, its grounds, including Dunsmuir flagpole, taken from Fort Street, circa 1900. This photograph is identical to one held by the BC Archives. Because this postcard is a real photographic print produced from the original negative, as opposed to a lithographic print, the quality is very high.

Craigdarroch's flagpole was made of Douglas fir and was 135-feet tall. Its arrival at the E & N yards in Victoria West in 1898 drew considerable interest. A local newspaper first stated it was destined for Carey Castle, but the story was corrected, confirming Craigdarroch as the place of planned erection.
