A black and white photographic postcard of Craigdarroch Castle's east facade as seen from Joan Crescent, the facade covered in heavy ivy growth, the east border wall not yet built by the Department of Soldiers Civil Reestablishment, thus exposing a rough earthen bank, Joan Crescent road-paving and subdivision boulevard evident in the foreground, in the centre a bollard for a horse, at the top left corner, "Dunsmuir Castle, VICTORIA B.C.", the verso printed with "Private Post Card" and "This space may be used for correspondence" and "This space for address only" and "Printed in Saxony", the card unused. Narrative
This photograph was taken before 1919 when the federal Department of Soldiers Civil Reestablishment removed much of the ivy and built a concrete wall where the exposed soil bank is visible along the sidewalk. The photograph was taken after 1909 when a residential subdivision was created on the former Dunsmuir estate, which resulted in Joan Crescent being paved and the creation of sidewalks and grass boulevards in the neighbourhood.
The lone bollard on the Castle's east lawn is a poignant reminder of what once was - a 28 acre Dunsmuir property of woodland trails, lawns, gardens, and horse stables.Date
