A framed clipping from the June 1889 issue of West Shore magazine, text from the printing on the paper's verso showing through to the picture side, the front bearing a printed illustration of the north and west facades of Craigdarroch Castle, the printed title, "DUNSMUIR CASTLE, VICTORIA, B.C." beneath the image, along the bottom left corner in pencil, "LITHOGRAPH FROM THE WEST SHORE, PORTLAND, ORE. JUNE 1889" .Narrative
This is a printed copy of a presentation drawing of Craigdarroch that was probably created by James Anderson, an architectural renderer frequently hired by Portland, Oregon architects to illustrate their designs. In The Catalogue of the First Annual Exhibition of The Portland Architectural Club Portland, Oregon In The Galleries of The Museum of Fine Arts (1908), (Portland: Portland Architectural Club, 1908), Anderson is listed as the creator of two drawings of Craigdarroch for architect David L. Williams, the former business partner of Craigdarroch's architect, Arthur L. Smith. Their firm was known as Williams & Smith. The Secretary of the firm was David's father, Warren H. Williams.
This clipping is from the June 1889 issue of the West Shore, an illustrated magazine published in Portland, Oregon from 1875 to 1891. The illustration depicts Craigdarroch in various ways that were not actually built. For example, there is a small gabled roof illustrated above the west garden entrance that does not exist. The illustration of third floor level of the north facade inaccurately depicts the exterior walls of bedroom 302 and a non-existent wall appears just west of the turret. The as-built chimney-top and roof ridges differ significantly from this drawing. History of Use
The full history of use of the magazine that contained this print is not known. Sometime before December, 1961, this clipping was taken from the magazine and placed into the frame that now holds it.
The Society for the Preservation and Maintenance of Craigdarroch Castle's notice of its second annual general meeting held at The Highlands, home of Mr. and Mrs. Millard. F. Lougheed, 950 Terrace Avenue on Saturday, December 2, 1961 includes this paragraph:
"To raise funds for the lighting of the towers the Society is raffling a rare lithograph of Craigdarroch Castle, taken from the West Shore of Portland, June, 1889, in a magnificent black, gold, and red frame. Tickets are 25 cents each, or three for 50 cents. The draw will be at the annual meeting.
Members who could sell books of tickets are asked to get in touch with Miss Lucie Woodrow, EV 2-4790.
Here is another way to help an important community project."
The winner of the draw was Victoria history professor Dickson M. Falconer.1 The print was acquired from his widow in 2004.
